The foreign banks, besides observing Christmas (25th and 26th Dec.), Good Friday, Easter Monday, and the Japanese official holidays, keep the Chinese New Year, which generally falls in February. 5. - Guides. Licensed guides understanding English can be engaged at any of the principal hotels in Tokyo, Yokohama, Kyoto, and Kobe. The charge at present (1913) is as follows: 4 yen per day per tourist, and 50 sen to 1 yen for each additional person. In all cases, the guide's travelling and hotel expenses must be paid by his employer. Messrs. Cook and other tourist agencies also undertake to provide guides and to arrange all other matters for the convenience of travellers.

language, unless they be expert travellers, or confine themselves to such places as Tokyo, Kyoto, Nikko, etc., where a certain amount of English is spoken. Those knowing a little Japanese may feel themselves more their own masters by hiring a man-servant, or "boy," also able to cook, and having neither objection to performing menial functions, nor opinions of his own as to the route which it will be best to take. Ladies may sometimes find it convenient to hire a Japanese maid (generally called amah by the foreign residents). Some of them speak English and act more or less as guides.
